Nymphomaniac: Vol. II (2013) ★★★★ (contains spoilers)

This review may contain spoilers.

Recently I went through and began watching the most disturbing films ranked by a number of popular movie sites and nothing really moved me or disgusted me to the degree where I stopped watching. Then, without looking for it, this film made me pause it twice before I could get through the abortion scene. Didn’t think it would ever happen, but this film brought me to my limit—and I do not have any moral or political stance on the act of abortion itself. It was just the debauchery of that scene that triggered the reaction.

I managed to watch through it and, although this is not classified as a horror film, the perils of one woman’s addiction is extremely horrific, disgusting and brutal. While Vol. 1 really explored the more erotic side of the addiction, Vol. 2 was mostly about the dark side, the body horror, the psychological diminishment, the tarnishment of the human soul as its eroded away by an extreme, all-consuming addiction to sex.

While some didn’t like the ending, I thought it fit perfectly with the movie. It was bleak, hopeless and quite possibly even more psychologically brutal to Joe than all of the other terrible things that happened in the film.

It’s tough to rate this one, as it’s brilliant in execution of an extreme movie, but a movie in which the viewer will most likely hate and have a difficult time getting through.

Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)
