Handling the Undead (2024) ★★★★

First truly good movie I’ve seen in 2024. I was anxious to watch this one, so I caught it with a Sundance ticket for the showing. My favorite horror film of all time (to date) was Let the Right One In, which came from the same writer, so this one landed at the top of my 2024 watch list. While not as good as Let the Right One In, it definitely didn’t disappoint.

Really a different take on zombies. This is what I’d consider a melancholic tale of the undead. Think lethargic zombies, so not really any action like most zombie films. This is a grief-stricken emotional ride about love and loss, death and living on.

This is a low-key depressive film which is extremely effective in unsettling the viewer throughout its runtime.

This film should remind us all that death, though much maligned and feared, is really a beautiful and essential function of nature. Death is the reason we are alive. Without it, there is no room / no cycle for the continuation of life. Death clears the way for new life; death is the ultimate painkiller, the savior of our further suffering.

This may sound bleak, but so is this movie. It really shines a light on the fact that dead is better than the alternative world we’re thrust into as this movie begins.

Rating: ★★★★ (out of 5)
