GrimTales is an independent horror-focused publishing imprint originally founded to explore decentralized publishing and digital ownership through emerging technologies. From its inception, the company was backed by a founding support team with more than fifty years of combined publishing experience, including two Bram Stoker Award–winning publishers, a veteran graphic designer, and over a dozen established authors working across horror, gothic, and weird fiction.

In 2025, GrimTales was purchased outright by Shane Staley and restructured as a focused side project dedicated exclusively to dark literature. During this transition, all NFT-based book publishing was intentionally paused to allow the technology to mature and to reassess its long-term viability as a meaningful distribution format for serious readers and collectors.

Under Staley’s direction, GrimTales reset its publication model around tangible, collectible works and immersive digital experiences. The imprint now concentrates on limited edition hardcover releases alongside a new format known as 3D Web Books—fully realized digital editions featuring integrated audio and visual presentation. These releases are offered exclusively through Miskatonic Books, where Staley has been a partner since 2011.

The GrimTales reboot represents a deliberate return to true independent publishing. The company’s mission is no longer scale or mass-market penetration, but direct connection—selling through independent booksellers, cultivating collectors, and intentionally cutting out corporate marketplaces such as Amazon. GrimTales exists to support authors, honor the physical book, and experiment carefully with digital forms that serve the work rather than dilute it.
