Society (1989) ★★

Society

Overview

The rich have always fed off the poor. This time it’s for real.

Bill is worried that he is ‘different’ to his sister and parents. They mix with other ‘upper class’ people while Bill is more down to earth. Even his girlfriend seems a bit odd. All is revealed when Bill returns home to find a party in full swing. Not for the weak of stomach.

Review

Society is a weird ’80s throwback that was fairly well-received as one of director Brian Yuzna’s best films. He takes the the rich siphoning from the poor theme to its literal edge with an ending that just might make the WTF-Hall-of-Fame. But for the surreal, gross effects, this movie is just a horrible B-movie. Complete with shotty acting, uneven script and some horrible dialogue.

The mystery of where Society comes in takes way too long to unfold. It culminates in the act known as The Shunting which definitely will bring a smile to the faces of B-movie horror lovers high and low. But even that subversive display couldn’t save the movie as a whole.
