Army of Darkness (1992) ★½

Army of Darkness

Overview

Trapped in time. Surrounded by evil. Low on gas.

Ash, a handsome, shotgun-toting, chainsaw-armed department store clerk, is time warped backwards into England’s Dark Ages, where he romances a beauty and faces legions of the undead.

Overview

How the Evil Dead Trilogy went from campy horror to dark fantasy sword and sorcery, I’ll never know. This finale in the trilogy was a pure letdown. Really a horrible film. I get the nostalgia of it, how it was meant to be stupid and zany, but it was also a bore. The cartoonish comedy didn’t strike a chord with me. It all seemed like a lazy way to end a classic series.

But Army of Darkness gets rather good reviews. I think there is a legion of Evil Dead, Sam Raimi, and Bruce Campbell fans that would have cheered for any end product. But this last piece not only sucked, it aged horribly.

I still love Bruce Campbell, the original Evil Dead, its reboot and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Unfortunately I just didn’t like Army of Darkness at all.

This was sure as hell not groovy!
