Review
Hand-down, my favorite movie of 2022. X really elevated Ti West as one of the best horror directors working today. I love how the first half of the movie is creepy and horny and the second half is just creepy-slasher and gory. What this film did for Ti West, it also did for Mia Goth: it rightfully elevated her but as the ultimate lead actress in the genre. Throw in Brittany Snow and Jenna Ortega for a ride, the cast is supreme.
X balances perfectly bits of humor, horror and sleeze. The paradox between young and old plays such a dynamic part. It feels like a foreshadowing of Maxine’s journey, particularly with her looking at the picture of the young Pearl as a dancer. Also a great setup for the sequel/prequel Pearl. Is Maxine too naive to understand that what she seeks will ultimately be destroyed, as all things are, with time?
Rewatched and reviewed this movie just before the debut of Maxxxine in theaters.
