Review

The Evil Within is a disjointed mess of a film, but not without its merits. The movie is extremely hard to follow and make sense of, but it’s made to be disorienting. It’s really from the perspective of a mentally handicapped young man and how dark forces manipulate him. This is an experience quite unlike any other horror movie, so its originality gets high marks. However, the way it’s told really didn’t make for the best movie-watching experiencing. There are just too many weird shifts in the story. Also, several holes in the plot.

I will say The Evil Within is a flawed, yet original and disturbing film. This is one that will either grow on me as I distance myself from the initial viewing, or it might just get downgraded when I rewatch it, trying to sort it all out. But one thing is for sure: it’s not a movie I will soon be forgetting.

Rating: ★★½ (out of 5)
