Disclaimer: I was co-publisher for the first edition book release of The Woman by Jack Ketchum and Lucky McKee through Infernal House, before it was optioned for film.
I always believe that, in most cases, the book is better than the film. But The Woman was a solid film with an outstanding portrayal by Pollyanna McIntosh as the Woman. The way she moves and stares throughout this film really gives off that feral creature vibe. But as horror goes, she takes backseat to the evil depicted in the character of the lawyer Chris Cleek played by Sean Bridgers. Tough to find a character to hate on more than this guy. He plays a weird mix of quirky and cocky abominable asshole and does it very nonchalantly. Give me a feral woman any day over this breed of domesticated man. My biggest disappointment with the movie is that his death didn’t take up more screen time, have more sheer violence to it and utter debasement.
The Woman begs the question: are we really better off as a civilization in our current state as domesticated humans? Watch this movie and pity the poor daughter and wife and you’ll see why the character of the Woman in this film is one of horror’s best anti-heroes.
