Review

Signs in my favorite M. Night Shyamalan movie. Currently in the top-15 in all my all-time favorite horror movies. Perfect cast, superbly shot and the core of the story is amazing. Each time I watch this movie I get the chills. Not from being frightened, but how the plot comes together in the face of threat. There might be aliens in this movie, but this film transcends both sci-fi and horror. Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix hit that famous 507-foot home run in their portrayals as brothers Graham and Merrill. The child actors in this (Morgan and Bo) played by Rory Culkin and Abigail Breslin respectively shine as well.

Being from Indiana and having navigated my fair share of cornfields, the creep-factor hits home. I tend to stay away from running blindly into cornfields…you lose track of direction and there tend to be a few surprises nestled within. I love baseball, so the “swing away, Merrill” scenes are iconic. Even though I’m in group 1 (luck happens), the transition of Graham back to Father Graham was powerful, nevertheless. Again with the chills.

Signs is a classic, a movie that will be extremely hard to fall out of my all-time favorite movies.
