Lars von Trier is genuinely an effed up genius. There is a trauma he wants passed along to each and every one who watches this film. This is a director I can count on for making me feel extremely uncomfortable, and he does it brilliantly.
The ending is open to interpretation and has sparked much discussion and debate. One possible interpretation of the ending is that it represents the characters’ descent into madness, guilt, and despair. The film explores themes of grief, loss, and the darker aspects of human nature. Some suggest that the events in the woods may be symbolic of the characters’ psychological struggles and inner demons.
Lars von Trier’s films often provoke strong reactions and are known for their challenging and controversial content. The ending of Antichrist intentionally leaves room for ambiguity and multiple interpretations, allowing viewers to bring their own perspectives and experiences to the film.
In the end, this is a hopeless, masterpiece of nihilism which explores humanity and nature and how the two are at odds.
