Maniac (1980) ★½

Maniac

Overview

I warned you not to go out tonight!

A psychotic man, troubled by his childhood abuse, loose in NYC, kills young women and local girl American models and takes their scalps as trophies.

Review

Hands-down, the coolest thing about this movie is its poster. It’s all downhill from there.

Unimpressed and bored sums up my experience with this ’80s “classic”. You have Joe Spinell as Frank Zito, aka The Maniac. If you’re into whimpering mommy-boy psychopaths who stroll for their victims while simultaneously having low-key moaning orgasms while in pursuit, this one’s for you!

I will say that Joe Spinell is definitely creepy in this. Way too creepy to be hanging out with models or dating pretty photographers in between losing his shit (and mind) as a serial killer.

There is a modern remake of Maniac starring Elijah Wood. As bad as this original is, this might not be such a hot ticket to add to my watchlist.
