The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) ★★★½

The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Overview

The Terror is Real

When hundreds of videotapes showing torture, murder and dismemberment are found in an abandoned house, they reveal a serial killer’s decade-long reign of terror and become the most disturbing collection of evidence homicide detectives have ever seen.

Review

The Poughkeepsie Tapes is a well-balanced extreme found footage film. It’s disturbing, yet not overly seasoned with depraved sex or gore which makes this a much more watchable film than other similar extreme indies like the August Underground series. It morphs into a mockumentary complete with TV news clippings and testimonials. Some of the acting in these faux interviews is a bit cringeworthy (almost laughable), but it still holds on to chill viewers and keep attention spans on the depravity at hand.

Rating: ★★★½ (out of 5)
