It Follows

Overview

It doesn’t think, it doesn’t feel, it doesn’t give up.

When carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her older boyfriend for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her defend herself.

Review

It Follows takes the perils and vulnerability of coming of age sexual experimentation and nicely blends classic horror tropes. What you get is an intense, effective horror film. And about as fine of a cautionary tale about teenage sex that exists. Its creepy, nightmarish vibes resonate throughout the film until the very last scene.

Now if this scenario were to play out in real life (cursed by intercourse) and the only way to delay it is passing the act to someone else, then here are some thoughts. Maybe a swinger gang-bang might be a wise choice. Just introduce yourself to the melee, have sex with a single person and then exit. Meanwhile, hopefully, the orgy continues and by the time it ends, you’re at least four to five deaths away from being stalked by the curse once again.

Another thought: the terms ‘cursed clitoris,’ ‘haunted hoo-ha’ or ‘bedeviled beaver’ might not detract males from a dating profile, but most certainly a ‘possessed penis’ would thwart most females. Just saying.

Also, It Follows should be a staple viewing in every sex education class. If more teenage girls were forced to watch this, abstinence would be on the rise.
