Shaun of the Dead (2004) ★★★★½

Shaun of the Dead

Overview

A romantic comedy. With zombies.

Shaun lives a supremely uneventful life, which revolves around his girlfriend, his mother, and, above all, his local pub. This gentle routine is threatened when the dead return to life and make strenuous attempts to snack on ordinary Londoners.

Review

Currently in my top-10 horror movies of all time is Shaun of the Dead. When it comes to horror comedy, this film is next to none. It’s a buddy comedy set amidst the apocalypse. What make it a classic is the brilliant chemistry between leads Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. A couple slackers tumbling through life as they so rudely get the rugpull from a looming zombie uprising.

Twenty years after first watching this movie, it hasn’t lost anything. It remains as fun and as thoroughly entertaining as my first viewing. It’s so easy to relate and genuinely love the characters. The humor is both smart, original and raunchy, but well balanced throughout. And it has a lot of heart between its comedic tension-breaking moments. For horror fans, it holds its genre luster quite well with some nicely-timed scares and gore.

Shaun of the Dead remains the pinnacle of horror comedy movie productions. It’s timeless and unforgettable; it’s a classic that will not easily be copied any time soon.
